QASSIARSUK, Greenland — Carl and Ellen Frederiksen
Ellen Frederiksen is a teacher in Qassiarsuk, Greenland. Her husband Carl farms sheep on their land. Though historians believe sheep farming first occurred in South Greenland’s Norse settlements (800AD-1200AD), Carl’s grandfather, Otto Frederiksen reintroduced sheep farming to the area in 1924. Carl and several of Otto Frederiksen’s other decedents carry on the tradition today. As the climate in Greenland changes, its weather becomes less predictable, creating challenges for South Greenland’s sheep farmers.
Sheep farmer Carl Frederiksen’s wife Ellen describes how the changes are effecting their lives.
